January 19,2003 NELLE NIX SPECIAL TO THE OREGONIAN Whether through the slant of a deep brown eye, the tilt of a golden head or the arc of a broad white wing, LeslieAnn Butler's portraits of pets -- and sometimes, their people -- tell stories. Deep devotion. Mischievous characters. And at times even the Portland artist herself doesn't quite grasp just what the story might be. "Sometimes I don't even know what's happening in there," Butler says as she stands before a nearly finished piece of a couple and their dog that rests on an easel in her West Hills home-studio.
